What dress or outfit should a guest wear to a wedding?

Women have lots of freedom of choice when it comes to wedding attire. If you are unsure what to wear and the dress code isn’t stated on the wedding invitation, ask other guests what they intend to wear or use your own judgement based on the what you know about the bride and groom. One of our best pieces of advice is to stick to your own style and be you. You can choose from a classic simple look or pick a gorgeous pretty tea style dress. Your choice of outfit can also depend on how formal/informal the wedding is and where the venue is too.

What patterns and colours are appropriate to wear to a wedding?

The only thing we would suggest to avoid is wearing white, as you don’t want to upstage the bride. In the past, black and red could have also be a no-no for a wedding but these days a lot has changed the world can be your oyster. The safest bet is to go for neutral shades, colours and prints that will help you blend in. However, florals are always a great spring and summer option or you can go for strong bold colours if you wish make a statement.

What should you wear to an evening wedding?

Generally, we would advise avoiding wearing anything too short or provocative for a wedding ceremony. Which means that you might want to cover up with a tailored jacket or wrap but for the evening you have more freedom. A simple shift style dress or little black dress would work well for less formal evening receptions, tea dresses, cocktail dresses and trouser suits/jumpsuits are great for formal receptions.

What should you wear to an informal wedding?

An informal wedding can mean different things to different people, so it’s always best to check the dress code. For semi-formal or dressy casual weddings a cocktail dress, lightweight sundress, trendy skirt and top or dressy trousers and top are appropriate. If you have been invited to a casual wedding, pretty much anything goes apart from jeans, tank tops and shorts. Informal evening weddings tend to be smarter than casual daytime weddings but they still allow for plenty of flexibility, you could go for either a long sleeve or strapless maxi dress, a classic chic black party dress or boutique midi dress to make the ultimate statement.

What should you wear to a second wedding?

Fortunately, modern expectations have moved away from traditional etiquette with regards to second weddings which means that remarriages can be just as formal or as informal as first weddings. Whether casual or conventional there are a few rules of thumb to bear in mind when choosing your outfit. The important thing is to look and feel your best, simple patterns and bold colours will help. Weddings are not the best place to try out your new mini dress so go for something a bit longer. You can often get clues about the most appropriate attire from the wedding venue if it’s an outside affair in the heart of summer or an indoor religious ceremony in autumn that should guide your decision.

How to complete your wedding guest outfit

Weddings are often all day affairs which means there can be a lot of standing and hopefully some dancing at the end of the evening, therefore choose your shoes carefully and make sure you are comfortable. A classic court shoe can work for all occasions but you could also change your shoes for the evening and add a little sparkle with a strappy sandal. We suggest adding a matching clutch bag and fascinator to complete and your overall look.
